Share our pledge of the month to help make the world taste a little sweeter.

Writing says more. That's why I pledge to send someone I love a letter written with my very own hands this month via http://www.johnaltman.org

Getting an email from someone is nice. Especially if you like them (a lot). But getting a letter or a postcard from someone you like is even better. Even if what you say is dull as ditchwater and you can't even read your own handwriting, it's the thought that counts.

Pledges made:

We'd like to invite you to send someone you love a letter this month. Every tenth person who shows us a letter or postcard they've sent someone will receive a handwritten letter from John himself. True story. So get writing!

How we met John

Unless you’re one of the lucky few to have had the pleasure of his company, you could be forgiven for wondering just who on earth John Altman is. We wondered exactly the same thing when we first met him on Baker Beach, San Francisco. Back then, he was just a man with a beard and an infectious grin strolling along the beach with a tray of cookies, wearing nothing but an apron and a pair of dog-eared flip flops. We were entranced. Especially after he offered us a cookie. It might have been the sun, it might have been the gentle sea breeze, it might have been the intense combination of melted butterscotch and freshly squeezed grapefruit, but John’s were the best cookies we’d ever tasted. So damn good, we had to ask him if we could take them home with us. ‘Sure dude’ he said, ‘spread the love’. John invited us to spend a few days with him at his place. He baked, we ate and then — not long before we parted — he gave us the recipe for his cookies along with his blessing to make them around the world. His gift showed precisely the measure of the man to pass on his life’s work to us and ask for nothing in return except to make other people’s lives better. John had asked us to “spread the love.” So spread the love we did. Since those carefree days in San Francisco, we’ve tried to follow John’s exhortation in every part of our lives.

The Cookies

Sour Cherry & Chocolate
Sour cherries plucked well before their time to get your lips really pursing, combined with the crumbliest, flakiest Belgian chocolate we could find, baked with a whole lot of love.

Green Apple & Almond
John’s a firm believer that an apple and almond cookie a day keeps the doctor away. But after one you’ll probably want to eat the whole pack, so get some friends round to keep your nutrionist sweet as well.

Grapefruit & Butterscotch
These cookies are our healthiest yet. Well, that’s what we told ourselves as we put grapefruit in them, before adding butterscotch just like your mamma used to make to get that extra crunchiness.

The book

This is a book you will cherish for a lifetime, for contained within its pages are the secrets to making all your dreams come true. Well, some of them. And if it not, it does contain everything you need to bake the perfect cookie*.

In 'What Would John Do?', William Georgi channels the spirit of John Altman - baker, nudist, part-time roadie from San Francisco - to guide you through the seven stages of baking your way to happiness. Seven simple, yet powerful principles made in the kitchen, but that will spread to every area of your life. Well, some areas of your life. And if not, at least you will know how to bake the perfect cookie.

Did we mention the perfect cookie part?

About the organisation

The John Altman Organisation exists to carry on John’s work in his absence and spread the love across the world. We do this by creating things that make the world a better, happier place and have as little impact on the environment as possible. We like to think that’s what John would have wanted.

The 3 principles

There are three founding principles that govern everything we do:

What would John do?
That is what we ask ourselves before we make any decisions. We don’t always know the answer to everything. But when we think of John, we know where to start looking for answers. And if, even then, we can’t find those answers, we just go and bake some cookies.

Spread the Love!
Dude. We want to make the world taste better for everyone. So we make things - cookies, wine - that are made for sharing and bringing people together. Lovely, I’m sure you’ll agree.

100% Good, not Perfect
We love the environment, but we're not 100% good for it. Yet. So although we've already improved a lot in the last year, we're still looking for ways to be better.

Here's a list of what we're currently doing to minimize our impact on the environment and what we'd still like to improve.

In the meantime, we welcome any suggestions for any way to improve our operations. If you have any, please send them to us at ilovetheplanet@johnaltman.org And if it works, you'll receive a lot of love, cookies, and a shout out on the packaging.
